Windows

1   Introduction

When I was thinking about playing some games on my home computer I had to install windows. I'm not very found of that operating system but most computer games requires windows to run. This turned out to be a really hard task... *angry*

2   Core installation

First I had problem to get the computer boot on my windows 98 CD. It turned out to be a bios issue, because I had not detcted the cd-roms... Well after some time I could boot the cd and then I installed the operating system using a unused license from my job. Actually I did tree installations on one hard disc with the matrox drivers but now I'm trying to describe the forth installation on a larger hard disc. The reason for all the reinstallations is that I have huge problems with the matrox controller and the virtual machine.

The new installation went just fine and it autodetected a plug-and-play monitor. I installed "Microsoft Windows Andra second edition swedish version. Rebooted windows a couple of times (>3) (of course).

I also did the internet connection ("Anslut till Internet") using almost the inverted default selection. Stupid windows!

3   Abit motherboard

The next thing to install is the Abit motherboard patches. The reason is that the system viewer in the control panel shows errors for "PCI input controller", "PCI Mass Storage Controller" and "PCI Multimedia Audio Device".

So I inserted the CD and started the installation program. To do this absolutely right I first installed Acrobat Reader (4.05) to make it possible to read the user manual. On page 81 (Appendix A) you can find the information on how to install the VIA Service Pack Drivers for Windows 98 SE. This is most probably the reason why I had problems with the Matrox Card before.

Quote from the manual: "You have to install the VIA Service Pack drivers before you install the VGA and audio drivers."

So I followed the installation instructions and installed the VIA Service Pack. I enabled DMA for IDE and Turbo mode for the AGP. Maybe I have to reinstall this later on. We will see. I also rebooted the computer (of course).

Then I installed the PCI Mass Storage controller using the instructions on page 66 and then rebooted the computer (of course)... After the reboot a Highpoint PCM device was automaticly detected. You can see it under the SCSI devices.

I also installed the USB filter driver using the instructions on page 87. And rebooted the computer of course.

4   SoundBlaster Live!

To test if the Abit Service Pack works properly I decided to install the drivers for the SoundBlaster Live! card. So I inserted the CD, choosed english, deselected acrobat reader (already installed) and did not register.

I choosed a full installation but I had to eject the CD when it reached 95%. This was a error though because now things started to get wrong... So I had to reinstall it which means deinstall and then install again. This time I did not eject the CD because that was not necessary. The delay was as it should. During the later install I choosed to replace vjoyd.vxd and msjstick.drv. Now it started to fine some new hardware, actually all SoundBlaster Live! hardware I had installed. And then rebooted (of course). Well actually I did not restart there because even if it suggested that I should restart it warned me that the installation was not complete and then suggested me not to. So I did not and then the MediaRing Talk 99 setup started. So I installed that and then restarted the computer...

When I logged in a setup program started and suddenly the system item in the control panel no longer complained on missing hardware. That is good.

5   Matrox G450

Now comes the real test. The Matrox card. I have had a LOT of problems with it but it should really work now when I have the motherboard patches installed.

So I inserted the CD and the installation program started. I choosed english and it tells me that it is going to install Matrox PowerDesk display drivers XML error: XML_ERR_NAME_REQUIRED at line 83
